The Necessity of Atheism by David Marshall Brooks is a very plainspoken book aimed at arguments based on religious dogma. The history of atheism is explored asserts that there are no problems in this age that theology is capable of solving. The final chapter includes short relevant essays from many great minds including Bertrand Russell, Albert Einstein, & Upton Sinclair.
"The Gods, in short belong to the region of belief, while morality belongs to that of practice."

Eve's Diary by Mark Twain is a delightful read. Short, but filled with Twain's hallmark wit and humor, this book is his take on what it must have been like to be the first humans.
"SATURDAY. - I am almost a whole day old, now. I arrived yesterday. That is as it seems to me. And it must be so, for if there was a day-before-yesterday I was not there when it happened, or I should remember it."

Is The Bible Worth Reading by Lemuel K. Washburn is probably one of my favorite books on atheism to date. I laughed out loud while reading this book. No review could really do it justice. Here are a few quotes:
"The presence of numberless rick men in Christian pews leads one to wonder if the gospel of Jesus has been kicked out of the church."
"The reason that revelation is always made to the simple is that the wise could not be imposed upon."
"When religion comes in at the door common sense goes out at the window"
"All that we know about God is what we don't know."

The PDF files below are books written for children by a Catholic priest and were approved by the Catholic Church as good reading for children. I feel it only prudent to include a warning. This material is extremely graphic. Below is a tame excerpt.
I've included them for the purpose of answering the theistic argument that morality belongs to theism.
"Are not thy garments hot? Come into this room. You see it is very small. But see,
in the midst of it there is a girl, perhaps about eighteen years old. What a terrible dress she
has on -- her dress is made of fire. On her head she wears a bonnet of fire." - The Sight of Hell

The Age of Reason by Thomas Paine is a book divided. Part 1 gives a fairly thorough description of the deistic principles that Paine held dear. The latter part of the book, Part 2 is where the true value lies for the atheist reader. His dissection of the Bible is remarkable. He uses nothing more than the Bible itself to undermine not only the authorship but the morality of it as well. As Paine digs into the Bibles own reported chronology we begin to see the impossibility of it's tales.
